The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Bobby L. Pistole (ASN: RA-15299401), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 May 1951, in the vicinity of Honch-on, Korea. On that day the enemy launched a fanatical counterattack against the 2d Battalion on Hill 442. Private Pistole, gunner on a .50 Caliber machine gun, was receiving intense automatic weapons and small arms fire on his position. As the enemy advanced, Private Pistole inflicted numerous casualties and dispersed large groups of the enemy. An enemy mortar round landed close to his position, hurling him away from the gun and wounding him. In spite of his wound he crawled back to his position behind the gun and continued firing until another man from his section relieved him. His disregard for personal safety and defense of his position prevented the enemy from breaking through and also gave his comrades inspiration to hold their line, turning the tide of battle. Private Pistole’s gallant action and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
