The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Ransom Dewey Piper, Jr. (ASN: NG-14257446), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 October 1951 in the vicinity of Tut-a-yon, Korea. On this date Company A was ordered to secure a new perimeter of defense. While descending the hill one of the officers entered an enemy mine field and was severely wounded by exploding mines. Corporal Piper, fully aware of the danger involved, proceeded to maneuver his way through the field in an attempt to assist the wounded man. While advancing to the side of his fallen leader, he stepped on a mine and was fatally wounded. Although unsuccessful in his attempt, his self-sacrificing spirit and courage were an inspiration to his comrades. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Piper on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
