The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant George Pintea, Jr. (ASN: 20502918), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Bibilo Hill, New Georgia Island, Solomon Islands, on 4 August 1943. While serving as commander of a platoon of heavy machine guns of an infantry company, Sergeant Pintea observed a soldier who had been hit by Japanese fire as he was crossing a small clearing. With utter disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Pintea crawled to the aid of the wounded man over 25 yards of exposed terrain, in the face of direct enemy fire, and although he himself received serious wounds, dragged the injured soldier to safety. The stamina, willing self-sacrifice, and courage displayed by Sergeant Pintea reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
