Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 502 (September 3, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John E. Pike (ASN: 0-962018), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 3 August 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On this day Lieutenant Pike, platoon leader, was leading his men on a routine patrol, when one of his squads was suddenly subjected to heavy mortar, automatic weapons, and small arms fire from the enemy positions. Disregarding his own safety, Lieutenant Pike fearlessly led a group to engage the enemy in an attempt to reach the wounded man. Moving among his men, Lieutenant Pike gave directions and words of encouragement. Upon reaching the fallen soldier, it was discovered he had died from the wounds. He ordered the man removed to a security previously established. During the withdrawal, Lieutenant Pike assumed the position of rear guard, delivering accurate and deadly fire which caused many enemy casualties, and allowed his group to withdraw successfully. The gallant conduct and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Pike reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
