The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Dean H. Pike (ASN: RA-17259842), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 28 November 1950, near Hagaru-ri, Korea, Private Pike was in a platoon which was pinned down by intense small arms fire, hand grenades, mortar and artillery fire, enabling the enemy to envelope it and threaten the company rear. Private Pike killed approximately twenty enemy until his ammunition was expended, and then killed one of the enemy at close quarters with his trench knife. His display of courage under fire was instrumental in breaking the enemy’s envelopment of his platoon and in effecting subsequent regrouping with the company. Private Pike’s heroic action reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
