The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Carl R. Pigeon (ASN: 0-2020759), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 4 August 1951, near Tuchon-ni, Korea, Lieutenant Pigeon, seeing a grounded plane, voluntarily and unhesitatingly piloted his unarmed helicopter through the intense enemy mortar and artillery fire to land near the liaison type aircraft which had been shot down behind enemy lines and upon landing went to the aid of the wounded pilot and the observer from the other plane. He then placed both the pilot and the observer in his helicopter and again disregarding advancing enemy troops, who were firing small arms at him, and the artillery and mortar fire in the area, took off and evacuated the wounded pilot and the observer to the nearest medical installation. This gallant deed by Lieutenant Pigeon undoubtedly saved the lives of the wounded pilot and the observer and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
