The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Michael H. Crutcher, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Company E, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Crutcher distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 14 June 1970, while serving in the Republic of Vietnam. When his unit came under intense hostile fire, Captain Crutcher rushed to the perimeter to engage the onrushing enemy force. Despite the barrage of fire directed at his position, he continued to direct his men’s fire until the enemy retreated. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
