Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 141 (May 14, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Lewis Andrew Pick, Jr. (ASN: 0-62571), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 39th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 12 February 1951, near Chom Chon, Korea, Lieutenant Pick, an artillery forward observer on a patrol with Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, was pinned down by intense small arms and automatic weapons fire directed at the patrol by a strong hostile force entrenched on a commanding ridge to his right flank. Although exposed to the heavy enemy fire, Lieutenant Pick moved forward to a position from which he directed extremely effective artillery fire on the enemy, neutralizing many of its emplacements and enabling friendly troops to move forward under cover of the barrage. When the barrage was lifted, Lieutenant Pick courageously joined in the attack against the enemy-held fortification, personally accounting for three enemy dead. Because of the intensity of the enemy fire, many members of the patrol were momentarily pinned down but, inspired by Lieutenant Pick’s words of encouragement, they followed him in the assault and successfully routed the enemy from its position. Lieutenant Pick’s outstanding courage and gallantry reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
