The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) John Jason Phillips (ASN: 0-324128), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 September 1950 and 19 September 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On 18 September 1950 his unit was given the mission of seizing hill 201, an important position in the Naktong River salient. During the initial phase of the attack most of the companies’ officers had become casualties, necessitating the placing of staff officers in these companies. Captain Phillips, the Battalion S-3, moved forward to coordinate closely the activities of the companies in the assault. He advanced fearlessly through enemy small arms and mortar fire to each company in turn, issuing instructions to the new officers and personally started the attack forward again. He stayed on the field of battle, moving from position to position, encouraging the men by voice and example to continue the attack. Early in the evening of 18 September 1950 he was wounded and although suffering from great pain he refused to be evacuated by stayed through the night directing and supervising the night operations. Again on the morning of 19 September 1950 he was wounded but refused evacuation until the objective was gained. The gallantry and inspiring leadership displayed by Captain Phillips was instrumental in the successful assault on Hill 201 and reflects the highest credit upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
