The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Robert F. Peterson (ASN: 0-1298121), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 28 November 1950, at Sachang-ni, Korea, Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry was attacked by a large enemy force. The outer defense perimeter was infiltrated and the command post was threatened. Captain Peterson saw the enemy had surrounded the command post. He, of his own volition and with disregard for his own personal safety, called for artillery fire to be directed against his position. This fire harassed the attacking enemy and gave the remaining men of C Company time to maneuver into a position from which they could direct withering rifle fire at the enemy and eventually cause him to withdraw. The coolness under fire, courage, and devotion to duty of Captain Peterson were an inspiration to his men and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
