The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John Peroglio (ASN: 36030091), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 132d Infantry Regiment, Americal Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 13 March 1944. During an attack by his company, Private Peroglio left a protected firing position and ran forward, taking cover in one of the enemy’s abandoned foxholes. To halt this penetration of their territory, the Japanese covered the foxhole with intense fire. In a single-handed attempt to drive off the enemy and reduce the effective mortar shelling that was being directed at his company’s assault line, he raised himself above the parapet of the foxhole and for five minutes delivered well-aimed automatic rifle fire into the enemy line until he was fatally wounded. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
