Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 88 (April 7, 19510

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Allen Leeds Peck (ASN: 0-20327), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of the 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 31 January 1951, near Yongin, Korea, the 2d Battalion had the mission of taking Hill 425, which was the dominating terrain feature in the regimental sector. Colonel Peck, having been with the forward attacking elements the previous day, had acquired first hand visual knowledge of the approaches to Hill 425. At 0500 hours Colonel Peck had his attacking elements cross the line of departure. This movement during darkness completely surprised the enemy but, notwithstanding this element of surprise, the firmly entrenched, determined enemy fought back viciously and with tenacity to hold the ground they occupied. A tremendous volume of automatic fire sprayed our forces and simultaneously a terrific barrage of artillery fire landed among the attacking units, temporarily stalling the attack. Colonel Peck took immediate steps to remedy the situation. He reorganized his attacking elements and had them continue the attack. With complete disregard for his personal safety he continuously exposed himself to enemy small arms and incessant mortar fire in order to coordinate the supporting fires of his own and an adjacent battalion, as well as to adjust and direct supporting artillery fire. As a result of Colonel Peck’s courageous and exemplary leadership, the objective was secured and the enemy force routed with many casualties. The professional skill, courage, and coolness under fire, and inspirational gallantry displayed by Colonel Peck reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
