The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Charles L. Peacock (ASN: 14066493), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving as Aerial Engineer and Top Turret Gunner of a B-24 Liberator Bomber of the 791st Bombardment Squadron, 467th Bombardment Group (Heavy), EIGHTH Air Force on, in aerial operations during an operational mission to Tutow Air Field, Germany, on 29 May 1944. After his aircraft had been severely damaged by enemy anti-aircraft fire and the pilot had given the bail-out order, Sergeant Peacock calmly forced the right bomb bay door open with an axe, enabling the other crew members to escape safely. He then remained with the pilot until the aircraft crashed in the Baltic Sea. The outstanding courage and steadfast devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Peacock reflect great credit on himself and the Army Air Forces.
