The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Warren P. Pauley (ASN: 0-1286545), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 7 December 1950, when the 1st Marine Division was surrounded and completely cut off by a numerically superior enemy force, in the vicinity of Kotori, Korea, Captain Pauley bravely volunteered to evacuate wounded from the isolated area. Piloting an unarmed liaison type aircraft, he flew seven missions over mountainous terrain and landed on an extremely short airstrip which was being continuously subjected to an intense volume of hostile fire. Captain Pauley was directly responsible for the evacuation of twenty severely wounded infantrymen to safety where timely medical attention was afforded. Captain Pauley’s gallantry, aggressiveness, and selfless devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the esteemed traditions of the military service.
