Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 192 (June 18, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Delmar Patton (ASN: US-52002313), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 to 15 February 1951, near Chipyong-ni, Korea. On these dates he was an ammunition bearer with a mortar section of an infantry unit which was subjected to a fierce enemy attack. During the attack the enemy succeeded in destroying several positions in the platoon forward of the mortar section. Realizing that his section was in jeopardy, Private Patton unhesitatingly moved to a position in the forward platoon, from which he brought effective rifle and grenade fire to bear upon the enemy. In spite of great odds, he remained in position, attempting to hold off the enemy, until his position was overrun by the numerically superior enemy forces and he was killed. The gallant and unselfish heroism displayed by Private Patton on this occasion was instrumental in saving many lives within his unit, and reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
