The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Field Artillery) Samuel M. Patten, United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in the vicinity of the Solomon Islands in July and August 1942. Captain Patten organized and established advanced tele-radio observation posts on islands near those occupied by the enemy, maintaining them by frequent trips through waters infested by enemy submarines. His actions reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
