The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Vicente Pascua (ASN: US-50000425), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of 2d Reconnaissance Company, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 June 1951, in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. Sergeant Pascua commanded a patrol and while returning from a mission, was warned of an enemy ambush by a soldier who had been attacked directly ahead of the patrol. Sergeant Pascua helped the soldier to mount the personnel carrier and continued to rescue the other two soldiers, one of whom was seriously wounded, and proceeded with his vehicles to the area of ambush. At this point the enemy, using automatic weapons and grenades, attacked the patrol causing a tank driver to lose consciousness. Because of the narrowness of the road, a personnel carrier was forced to halt directly in the line of enemy fire. The patrol was thus exposed to extreme danger from grenades thrown by the enemy from commanding positions along nearby high ground. In order to minimize the effectiveness of this enemy action, Sergeant Pascua moved from the tank commander’s hatch and manning the .50 caliber machine gun delivered prolonged fire upon the enemy to the rear. Thus exposing himself to intense automatic weapons and grenade fire. Sergeant Pascua was wounded by grenade fragments. Despite his wounds, he continued until the tank driver regained consciousness. At this time one of the two wounded soldiers crawled to the tank. Sergeant Pascua dismounted, exposing himself to intense fire, and aided the wounded men on to the tank. Having found the third soldier dead, he aided the patrol forward and by pinning down the enemy with deadly fire, Sergeant Pascuaá prevented a counterattack upon his patrol, allowing it to move forward through the ambush and succeeded in evacuating the two soldiers. The courage and resourcefulness displayed by Sergeant Pascua in this action reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
