The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Ranson A. Palmer (ASN: RA-20202971), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 24 January 1951 in the vicinity of Hoengsong, Korea. On that date he was assistant patrol sergeant of a combat patrol which had the mission of aggressive reconnaissance for ten miles beyond the 1st Battalion’s min line of resistance. During the advance the patrol was subjected to intense fire from a large enemy force occupying well-entrenched, camouflaged positions on commanding terrain. In spite of the resultant confusion Sergeant Palmer quickly and effectively reorganized the scattered troops and daringly led them in a bold charge against the enemy emplacements. Following their undaunted leader, his men charged forward in a fierce assault, killing ten enemy and causing the remainder to flee in disorder. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Palmer reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
