Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 360 (March 7, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Kenneth L. Palmer (ASN: 20503347), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 21 August 1943, when, as forward scout of a combat patrol, he led the group to within 100 feet of an enemy strong point, and then, when intense fire forced a retreat, ignored his own safety to commence a vigorous and effective return of fire which not only permitted an orderly withdrawal but also stopped a Japanese attack against the outnumbered patrol. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
