Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 495 (1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Lincoln Ralph Painter (ASN: US-55273151), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the early morning hours of 24 June 1953, in the vicinity of Chat-Kol, Korea, Company K positions were subjected to a large scale enemy attack supported by heavy artillery and mortar fire. As the assault commenced, Sergeant Painter immediately rushed through the trenches, checking the positions of his men and directing their fire. Later, he was informed that the adjacent sector had been overrun. In order to prevent a further penetration of the line, he bravely guided his men to the flank, deployed them and, despite the increased intensity of the bombardment, courageously led them toward the infiltrating foe. In this valiant movement, he was mortally wounded by fragments from an exploding round. Sergeant Painter’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
