The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Alfred Padello (ASN: RA-19327949), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 23 August 1950 in the vicinity of Taegu, Korea. Corporal Padello’s company had launched an assault against well-entrenched enemy forces. During the advance an enemy machine gun suddenly opened fire, pinning down his squad and seriously imperiling the momentum of the attack. Under the extremely heavy hostile fire being directed at him, Corporal Padello left his position of comparative cover and crawled forward toward the enemy emplacement. When he was close enough to the enemy weapon, he hurled hand grenades until one landed directly among the enemy killing or wounding the entire crew and destroying the gun. His courageous action enabled his squad to resume the assault and contributed greatly to the success of his company’s attack. The gallantry displayed by Corporal Padello reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
