The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John C. Owensby (ASN: RA-014391600), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 July 1953 in the vicinity of Yugong-Ni, North Korea. On that date, positions of Company L were attacked by a large enemy force. During the severe shelling that accompanied the assault, Private Owensby’s machine gun position was seriously damaged by an enemy mortar round. Realizing his additional fire power was sorely needed, Private Owensby, with complete disregard for personal safety, placed his weapon on top of the damaged bunker and resumed his fire. He remained in this exposed position, delivering an accurate base of fire until his ammunition supply was expended. Unhesitatingly, he made his way across the intensely shelled area to another position and obtained more ammunition. Once more he braved the imminent dangers as he made his way back to his position, stopping only long enough to care for a wounded comrade. Taking up the fight once again, he remained exposed to the enemy fire until wounded. Although he could no longer operate his weapon, he refused evacuation and stayed in the area, encouraging others and assisting in every way possible. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Owensby reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
