The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Dale B. Osborne (ASN: RA-17259687), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Hyonbang-ni, Korea, on 1 February 1951. His company was attacking as part of the concerted drive to the Han River. The company objective was defended by an estimated reinforced enemy company in excellently prepared, sandbagged, and camouflaged positions. As the attack progressed the leader and assistant leader of his squad were wounded and the squad began to lose its fighting cohesion. He immediately assumed command of the squad, effected what reorganization was necessary, and started the men moving forward smoothly once more. Many dug-in riflemen and sub-machine gunners were eliminated by the squad under his capable leadership- and direction. As the men neared their objective at the top of the hill they were met by a hail of hand grenades and began throwing his own grenades at the enemy behind the ridge top. Reaching the summit of the hill he directed such intense and accurate rifle fire on the enemy that the count attack force fled in confusion. In spite of their flight he killed ten of the enemy with grenades and rifle fire before they could reach cover. Having consolidated his position he was able to direct the fire of his squad to his flanks and thus aid other elements of the company in reaching their objectives. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Osborne, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
