Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 178 (June 6, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery), [then Second Lieutenant] Timothy Osato (ASN: 0-60241), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 10th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the period of 28 through 30 November 1950, near Schang-ni, Korea, Lieutenant Osato continuously manned a small observation post outside the perimeter of the infantry battalion to which he was attached. Despite repeated enemy attacks in strengths up to company size, he held his post, at times repulsing the enemy with pistol fire, while calling for and adjusting artillery and mortar fire upon them. At one time, Lieutenant Osato’s position was completely surrounded and yet he remained and conducted the important observation of fire until the enemy were thrown back by friendly troops. The gallantry and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Osato reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
