The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant Forrest Burns (ASN: 58085), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Soissons, France, July 18 – 19, 1918. When the advance of his platoon had been halted by heavy machine-gun fire from the front, Sergeant Burns, with three others, advanced through heavy machine-gun fire and attacked the enemy position. His group succeeded in capturing two enemy machine guns, thereby enabling his organization to advance with slight loss. After the platoon commander had been killed, he directed the advance of his platoon until severely wounded.
