The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private George Henry Maynard, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 13 December 1862, while serving with Company D, 13th Massachusetts Infantry, in action at Fredericksburg, Virginia. A wounded and helpless comrade, having been left on the skirmish line, Private Maynard voluntarily returned to the front under a severe fire and carried the wounded man to a place of safety.
