The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Paul Olson (ASN: RA-13058094), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 31 August 1950 near Changnyong, Korea. On the night of this date overwhelming enemy forces had penetrated our defenses along the Nakton River and were forcing our troops to withdraw. Sergeant Olson, an assistant platoon sergeant, saws that his platoon was in danger of being surrounded by the enemy. With no regard for his own safety, he exposed himself to the intense hostile fire, in order to inspire his men and urge them to remain in position. On two occasions he personally attacked the enemy with hand grenades, enabling the remainder of his platoon to withdraw to more tenable positions. When last observed by his comrades he was covering the withdrawal of his platoon. The gallantry and inspiring leadership displayed by Sergeant Olson reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the high traditions of the military service.
