The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Gilbert A. Olson, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 12 March 1944. During an American counterattack on strongly held Japanese positions on Hill 700, Lieutenant Olson distinguished himself by a display of outstanding initiative and courage. When the crest of a ridge was reached, he dashed over and beyond it to destroy at least two pillboxes. With the silencing of the machine guns, other members of his platoon were able to inch forward under less damaging fire. Although wounded during this action, he refused to be relieved until after the mission was accomplished. Lieutenant Olson’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
