The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Carl C. Olsen (ASN: RA-39465405), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 7 September 1950 in the vicinity of Myrang, Korea. On that date Sergeant Olsen was leading a rifle squad of his company in an attack against a well-entrenched enemy force which was located on high ground. In the initial phase of the attack the company received extremely heavy automatic weapons fire which halted the assault and pinned down Sergeant Olsen’s squad. Realizing that the entire attack was in danger of failure, he fearlessly exposed himself and advanced alone into the devastating hostile fire, firing his weapon as he moved forward. This intrepid action so inspired his men that they followed him and succeeded in driving the enemy from their positions, thus insuring the success of his company’s mission. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Olsen reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
