The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Fred R. Olds (ASN: RA-11149424), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 10th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 19 August 1951, Company F of the 65th Infantry Regiment and Battery A of the 10th Field Artillery Battalion were cooperating in an attack to clear a sector of the valley between Hills 480 and 488, near Chorwon, Korea. Sergeant Olds, attached to Company F as a radio operator to direct artillery fire on enemy targets, positioned himself on the right front of the company. The enemy soon attacked, killed the company commander’s radio operator nearby, and destroyed the radio. With the hostile troops closing in, Sergeant Olds delivered a final message to rear units and took up his position as rifleman. From extremely exposed positions he assisted in directing the withdrawal of friendly troops, the evacuation of the wounded and at the same time, covered the action with rifle fire. When the withdrawal was complete, Sergeant Olds, having by then exhausted his ammunition, sought safety for himself; but he encountered two hostile soldiers. Seizing an abandoned rifle, he killed both of the enemy, afterwards safely reaching the company. Sergeant Olds’ gallantry is in keeping with the highest traditions and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
