The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Richard N. Olague (ASN: US-56143341), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 September 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date Company C was attacking a strategic hill defended by a determined and numerically superior hostile force. During the entire battle Private Olague displayed exceptional courage, and on numerous occasion exposed himself to the intense enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire in order to employ more effective and devastating fire on the foe. As his platoon advanced to secure an intermediate objective, Private Olague maintained an exposed position and fearlessly engaged the enemy. His actions diverted the enemy’s attention from his comrades and enabled them to continue their assault. During the ensuing action, Private Olague was fatally wounded by the hostile fire but, through his courage and self-sacrificing devotion to duty his unit was able to secure its objective successfully. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Olague reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
