The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal James M. Okamura (ASN: RA-10104072), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 April 1951, near the Imjin River, Korea, when Corporal Okamura’s platoon was attacked by the enemy who had succeeded in infiltrating men around the exposed left flank of the company position, he volunteered to move forward from the perimeter to the threatened point. Despite the heavy enemy fire he made his way to a position behind a large rock 30 yards down the slope from where he could better observe and fire on the flanking effort. In this dangerously exposed position, Corporal Okamura’s helmet was pierced and knocked off by an enemy round. Moving back to the company perimeter and obtaining another helmet, he returned to his forward position and continued to bring effective fire on the enemy. Though wounded twice, once in the neck and again in the right arm, in the ensuing fire fight, he used his left hand and continued to pour a steady fire on the enemy until they at last withdrew. Corporal Okamura’s gallantry and extreme bravery reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
