Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 343 (August 8, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class James M. O’Gorman (ASN: RA-16253710), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 22 May 1951, while attacking Hill 440, Sergeant O’Gorman’s squad was pinned down by machine gun fire from two well concealed, entrenched enemy positions. Ordered to move his squad to another location so that he might effectively assault the emplacements, Sergeant O’Gorman fearlessly rose from his position and ordered his men to follow him. Heedless of the enemy fire, he led the squad in a furious assault and succeeded in knocking out both positions, killing two enemy soldiers and wounding four. Disregarding the intense hostile fire being concentrated on him and the fact that his squad had sustained six casualties, he continued in the assault until ordered to withdraw, at which time he evacuated his wounded comrades. Sergeant O’Gorman’s gallant leadership and aggressive actions were instrumental in the ultimate capture of the objective and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
