The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Albert L. Oddy, United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 22d Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in Germany on 1 April 1945. He was in charge of a machine gun section when the enemy counterattacked the company’s exposed left flank. With three of his men, Sergeant Oddy moved one of his guns into the gap through intense artillery and rifle fire. Electing to fire the gun himself, he immediately dispatched two of the men for ammunition and kept one for his assistant. His assistant was killed, and Sergeant Oddy single-handedly held up the counterattack by firing his machine gun from an exposed position until assistance arrived. Sergeant Oddy’s heroic action resulted in saving the situation for the entire battalion and reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
