The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Allan J. Nuzum (ASN: RA-16277873), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 65th Engineer Combat Battalion, 25th Infantry Division. On 29 January 1951 at Suwon, Korea, the headquarters area of Sergeant First Class Nuzum’s company was attacked by an infiltrating hostile force. When enemy pressure increased on the right flank, he voluntarily crossed an open courtyard under intense automatic weapons and mortar fire to join in the defense of the threatened flank. After the enemy had been driven back, he returned through bursting grenades to his former position and assisted in repelling the main assault. Although suffering from a painful wound, he left he area to obtain an ambulance and assisted in evacuating the other wounded before he accepted medical aid. Sergeant First Class Nuzum’s courageous initiative, aggressive spirit and selfless devotion to his comrades are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
