The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Alfred D. Nute (ASN: RA-17196241), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Tank Company, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 November 1950 in the vicinity of Won-ni, Korea. On that date Sergeant Nute was a tank gunner in position with his platoon on the banks of the Congchon River. While firing to hold off an enemy attack, he observed a wounded soldier lying on the other side of the river. Although enemy troops were dug in approximately 50 yards from the wounded man, Sergeant Nute fearlessly leaped from his tank, waded the river under intense hostile fire and carried the wounded soldier to the safety of his tank. He then mounted his tank and destroyed an enemy machine gun with tank fire. Once more he dismounted from his tank and while still subjected to constant enemy small arms fire, carried the wounded man another 200 yards to an aid station. His courageous actions were entirely voluntary and resulted in saving the life of his wounded comrade. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Nute reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
