The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Henry Corbett Nunnery (ASN: RA-34093667), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 28 November 1950, near Hagaru-ri, Korea, Sergeant Nunnery was a member of a platoon defending D Company’s rear. The company came under intense small arms, mortar, and artillery fire from a large enemy force. During the battle, the rear guard platoon was enveloped and the rear of the company exposed. Sergeant Nunnery, knowing the danger of delay, and with complete disregard for his personal safety, exposed himself to a murderous hail of fire in order to man a machine gun and cover the platoon’s breakthrough and regrouping with the company. During this action, Sergeant Nunnery was mortally wounded. The courage under fire displayed by Sergeant Nunnery reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
