The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Raymond Nunez, Jr. (ASN: RA-12328736), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Kach’il-bong, Korea. On that date Private Nunez’s platoon infiltrated the enemy lines and immediately set up a defensive position. During the night, a numerically superior enemy force launched several counterattacks on the friendly lines. Private Nunez, with complete disregard for his personal safety, met the brunt of the assaults and courageously held his section, inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. In the course of this action the hostile force succeeded in overrunning a section of the defensive line and while engaged in a hand-to-hand combat with several enemy soldiers, Private Nunez was fatally wounded. Through his courageous and self-sacrificing actions friendly forces were able to maintain their newly won positions. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Private Nunez on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
