The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Michael Evans Holroyd (ASN: 0-5351043), United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Holroyd distinguished himself by intrepid actions on 19 March 1969 while serving as platoon leader with Company D, 2d Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 196th Light Infantry Brigade. On that date, Company D was making a combat assault against well-fortified enemy bunker positions on Hill 187 near Tien Phuoc. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Lieutenant Holroyd led his men forward and directed their small arms and hand grenade fire against enemy positions. Although he was seriously wounded by an enemy grenade, Lieutenant Holroyd ignored his injuries and continued his advance against the enemy bunkers. Through his leadership and courage under fire, Lieutenant Holroyd’s unit destroyed the enemy positions, killed several insurgents and captured numerous weapons. First Lieutenant Holroyd’s personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division and the United States Army.
