The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Floyd E. Norton (ASN: RA-19238295), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 28 May 1951, in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. Sergeant Norton was in a vehicular column directly behind the tank-infantry task force, when enemy snipers opened fire and forced the occupants of the vehicles to take cover along the sides of the road. Sergeant Norton located a public address system and succeeded in putting it into operation. With the assistance of a Korean interpreter, he promptly proceeded to direct the snipers to lay down their arms and surrender. Almost immediately seven of the enemy came down from the hills and surrendered. The motor column then resume its movement but again was forced to halt and take cover from intense sniper fire which caused the column to be cut off from the leading elements of the task force. Sergeant Norton again put the public address system into operation, speaking to the snipers until his position was subject to such intense enemy small arms fire that he was forced to withdraw to a position of better cover. He then located the enemy and, fearlessly dashing forward, retrieved the public address system, and brought it to his new position. Speaking to the enemy snipers through the Korean interpreter, he advanced from his position and proceeded down the road in unobstructed view of the enemy who had listened to the broadcast. Apparently deciding that Sergeant Norton’s promises and intentions were true, 26 enemy soldiers marched from their places of cover and concealment and surrendered to Sergeant Norton. During this engagement Sergeant Norton was responsible for the surrender of 33 enemy soldiers. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Norton reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
