The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Clarence R. North (ASN: 17049607), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, from 12 to 15 March 1944. Technical Sergeant North demonstrated exemplary leadership and fighting spirit in directing and participating in several successful counterattacks against enemy penetrations within our lines. At one point he courageously made his way through connecting trenches to an enemy-held pillbox and neutralized it with accurately-placed grenades. On the way, he killed several Japanese who attempted to impede his progress. Later he led a successful attack which completely repulsed the enemy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant North, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
