The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Grady Lee Norris (ASN: RA-14283418), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 24 December 1951 in the vicinity of Pong-Gil, Korea. On that date, Sergeant Norris led his platoon on a patrol with the mission of securing strategic enemy positions. During the assault on enemy emplacements the platoon was pinned down by an intense barrage of automatic weapons fire from a well fortified position. Unhesitatingly Sergeant Norris moved forward and, completely disregarding all thought of his own safety, took an exposed position and opened fire on the enemy emplacement. He succeeded in silencing the weapon, enabling his men to resume their advance. When order was given to withdraw because of the heavy mortar and artillery fire Sergeant Norris remained to lead two members of his platoon to safety. He was wounded during this selfless action but continued on until his comrades reached safety. The gallantry in action and outstanding leadership displayed by Sergeant Norris reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
