The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Ralph H. Nordwig (ASN: RA-16321925), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 2d Engineer Combat Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea, on 8 March 1951. The enemy was fighting a delaying action and Corporal Nordwig’ s unit was minesweeping the road. At the time of the act the unit ,had taken cover in order to eat their noon meal. The infantry ahead was still fighting and one of their number was hit by enemy fire and because of the nature of his wound was unable to withdraw. A call went out for litter bearer’s and Corporal Nordwig immediately volunteered. Fearlessly and with utter disregard for his personal safety, he left his covered position, crossed open and exposed ground despite heavy enemy fire and reached the wounded man. He then carried the wounded soldier 300 yards to a position of safety. Throughout this period the enemy had good observation because of level terrain features and kept firing. His gallant act in saving the life of a comrade, while under fire, reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
