The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Francis G. Nordstrom, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 89th Medium Tank Battalion, 25th Infantry Division. On the morning of 26 November 1950 near Yongbyon, Korea, during an attack on a well-entrenched hostile force, friendly troops were immobilized by devastating machine gun and mortar fire. After forming a protective screen in front of the infantry, Lieutenant Nordstrom led his tank platoon toward the hostile positions and forced the enemy to divert the bulk of their fire power from the rifle elements. While the infantry secured positions of cover, he remained standing in his opened hatch under the direct fire of the enemy and calmly directed the destruction of their emplacements with a heavy volume of tank and machine gun fire. Lieutenant Nordstrom’s valorous initiative, aggressive leadership, and steadfast devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army.
