Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 649 (October 29, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) John F. Nolan, Jr. (ASN: 0-1596753), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer, Company A, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 August 1951 in the vicinity of Kobangsa-ni, Korea. On this date Company A was in the attack against a well-fortified enemy position. Captain Nolan, disregarding the intense enemy fire, advanced to the most forward elements of his unit in order to better observe the hostile position. While completely exposed to enemy observation and fire, Captain Nolan directed accurate artillery fire upon enemy positions, destroying several emplacements while inflicting numerous casualties upon them. His reassuring manner supplied the encouragement and confidence his men needed to repulse the overwhelming enemy force. While directing his men into more tenable positions, Captain Nolan was painfully wounded and had to be evacuated. The gallantry in action and outstanding leadership displayed by Captain Nolan reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
