The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Gus Noble (ASN: 0-969078), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 August 1951 in the vicinity of Hyon-ni, Korea. On this date during an attack on a strategic enemy-held hill, Company A was temporarily halted by heavy enemy mortar, automatic weapons and small arms fire. Lieutenant Noble, with complete disregard for his personal safety, left his position of comparative safety and advanced to the most forward elements of his unit. At this point, shouting words of encouragement to his men, Lieutenant Noble moved on toward the enemy positions. His unit, highly inspired by witnessing their leader brave the intense enemy fire, followed him to the objective and under Lieutenant Noble’s aggressive and fearless leadership completely overwhelmed the enemy force. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Noble reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
