The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Roger M. Nicholson (ASN: 0-2206938), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 October 1951 in the vicinity of Mundung-ni, Korea. On this date Lieutenant Nicholson’s unit was assigned the mission of attacking and securing a strategic hill defended by a well-entrenched hostile force. While leading his men in the attack on the steep slope of their objective they came under a heavy concentration of enemy fire. Although painfully wounded Lieutenant Nicholson continued to lead his men, courageously and bravely shouting words of encouragement to them. Still under intense hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire, he inspired his men by leading the way firing his carbine and inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. He was the first man to reach the top of the objective and only after the hill was secured and a defense perimeter set up did he consent to medical aid. The gallantry in action and outstanding leadership displayed by Lieutenant Nicholson on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
