Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 615 (October 19, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Gaither R. Nicholas (ASN: RA-15210423), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 August 1951 in the vicinity of Hyon-ni, Korea. On this date Sergeant Nicholas was a platoon leader with Company A, which was attacking heavily fortified enemy positions. As his platoon began its assault, hostile small arms and mortar fire commenced firing until the entire area was under enemy fire. During the ensuing action, Sergeant Nicholas, though wounded, moved about his men, giving directions and words of encouragement. He then led his unit upon the objective with such determination that the enemy was forced to abandon its position, while suffering heavy casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Nicholas on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
