The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John G. Newton (ASN: 0-2002693), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 24 to 25 July 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. At this time Lieutenant Newton was leading an eighteen man combat patrol deep into the enemy territory. Realizing that his patrol was 2400 meters in front of the Main Line of Resistance, Lieutenant Newton sent out scouts to see if the route was clear. As the lead scout crossed a foot bridge over a stream, he met an enemy soldier and killed him with a burst from his carbine. The enemy immediately poured withering automatic weapons and small arms fire on the patrol from three sides. Lieutenant Newton was wounded in the left eye during the initial action. Disregarding his painful wound, he called by radio for artillery fire to protect the withdrawal of the patrol. He continued to direct the supporting fire, while leading his patrol in an orderly withdrawal, until they had returned to friendly positions. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Newton reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
