Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 503 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant George J. Newton, Jr. (ASN: RA-32062078), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action on 17 and 18 May 1951 in the vicinity of Kunmul-gol, Korea. When the enemy began the initial phase of a fanatical attack on friendly positions, Sergeant Newton exposed himself to intense hostile fire, organized a group of comrades, and placed them in strategic positions. Later, with complete disregard for his safety, he reorganized carrying parties to carry ammunition and rations. On the following evening the enemy had surrounded the unit and attacked in force. When the order was given to withdraw, Sergeant Newton, though seriously wounded in the leg, organized the scattered remnants of friendly troops and led them through enemy fire to positions of safety. His courage and leadership won him the esteem of all who witnessed his actions. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Newton reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
